Project 2 Recap

Extraordinary Object: Perfume Bottle

I chose to replicate a perfume bottle gifted to me by my mom this Christmas. It is a typical, store-bought object she got from a makeup store. However, this object has meaning because she gifted my sisters and me the same bottle. I chose this object because it is something I use every day and, every time I use it, it reminds me of my family. On a technical level, I chose this object because I enjoyed its simple shape and straight lines. With this in mind, I knew I could add meaning to the bottle by giving it a unique and meaningful surface.

I treated the surface of this bottle as the most crucial part of the project, allowing it to be the main focus. In choosing a simple shape, I knew I could express myself through the surface and the materials. I covered it in a shiny, dark purple cloth and put the yarn on the more minor details. I chose this color because it is my mom’s favorite color. I put petals on two sides of the bottle to represent the floral scent of the perfume.

My intention was to give this bottle a warm and sophisticated look since it is a nicer perfume.

I transformed this bottle not something new by changing its color and details. I wanted it to feel more like a memory of a person rather than a completely realistic object. The rich color and soft fabric helped me achieve this.

I hope my audience makes their own connections to my bottle, letting themselves think of a memory or person when they look at it. Overall, I wanted this bottle to feel familiar and comforting to the viewer.
