Wearable:

I created an armband used to cover someone’s forearm. It is worn to brighten a person’s mood and remind them of warm, sunny days in the summer. It alters the arm’s function/ability, radiating positivity immediately when someone looks at it. It has a psychological element and offers the person the new ability to improve their own mood and the moods of others. I took inspiration from our long, cold winter this year and the never-ending talk of seasonal mood changes. The dreary winter encouraged me to want to create an object which reminded people of happier times in the warmth. I chose a forearm because it is often the part of the body that people use to compare their skin ton/paleness in the winter months. I have experienced this many times in my life, often holding my forearm up to my friends to see how pale I am. When I wear it, I feel happier and more confident in myself, focusing on the bright armband rather than my skin tone. I believe this is due to the comforting yellow and red colors, the string’s softness, and the string lights’ brightness.
I used wire, string, fabric, and LED string lights in this project. All of these materials were chosen to create a comfortable appearing object. The fabric flowers are to remind the person of summer, the string-covered wire is meant to feel soft, and the string lights are meant to remind them of the sun. During this project, I came to terms with my experience with seasonal mood changes and it brought me joy to create an object that would positively impact me. I realized how much I recognized people’s struggles around me and how I wanted to help them, but didn’t know how. This wearable would help me solve this problem. Overall, the wearable object I created has the power to affect the moods of people who see it and to offer them confidence regarding their feelings and looks during the dreary, winter months.
